The muddy, exciting 2017 Kentucky Derby was won by Always Dreaming, a horse with a Naples connection, who had never won a previous race! The newspaper reported that a minor owner of the winning horse lives here in Naples! The annual KY Derby Party was held at 5:00 on Saturday, May 6 in the Gathering Place. The hat contest for ladies drew over 20 participants, each with a stunning creation. The first place winner, who won a bouquet of a dozen red roses, was Mary, with her stylish rosey red creation and matching ensemble. Leslie won second place with a profusely decorated hat. Three brave men participated in the male hat contest, and the proud winner was Peter. Hat contest judges were Carl, (a retired federal prosecutor, so he had plenty of experience judging!), Selmer, and Lou.
As always, a delicious buffet was prepared by our outstanding kitchen staff and servers were on hand to serve drinks. Betting was hot, arranged by Bob & Andy, and a number of people who chose the winning horse won $10 each.
The party was planned by the Tower Pointe Activity Committee, ably chaired by Bennett and Mardelle. Bennett served as the master of ceremonies to keep the party lively. Doug Dick lent his tonsorial talent, startling people to attention to announce the beginning of the race on his magnificiant trumpet. Even if you don’t happen to be a fan of horse racing, the party was a time of excitement, good friends and yummy eats!! -Nona
